Toxigenic Moulds

The term "toxic mould" is deceptive and has led to misunderstandings and confusion concerning the health-related dangers of mould. In high enough concentrations, all molds -- toxicant or otherwise -- could cause health issues. As a result, some sources sit down with all mould as "toxic mould”. Two groups of toxicogenic (Mycotoxins producing) fungi (or moulds) can be distinguished. The first consists of fungi which invade their substrate and produce Mycotoxins on old or stressed plants: this is the area of field toxins. The other group contains those which produce toxins after harvesting: these are described as storage toxins. Fungi from the ground or plant debris may disseminate their spores onto the plant or seeds and then proliferate during storage if conditions allow.
